Be aware that the Kohala hotels- Royal Waikaloan, Hilton Waikoloa Village, Mauna Lani, etc.- are isolated 25-30 miles north of town. Without a rental car, you're stuck and at the mercy of the resort. Also, you're in the "saddle" of the island through which the trade winds blow, often in excess of 30 mph, a good part of the year, earning the local nickname "Wind Tunnel". This information is not, for obvious reasons, in their brochures!!
